Відтворення розмовного стилю мовлення та редукції тексту в субтитрах до українського фільму

Abstract

У статті досліджується розмовний стиль мовлення в тексті субтитрів українського художнього фільму «Сторожова застава» та шляхи його відтворення англійською мовою. Крім того, висвітлюється явище редукції тексту субтитрів на лексичному та синтаксичному рівнях. З’ясовано, що найчастіше у тексті субтитрів опускаються такі мовні елементи: повтори, власні назви у звертаннях, мовні засоби, що передають репризи, паузи, емоційно-забарвлені вигуки, слова-зв'язки, що не несуть семантичного навантаження.

The article considers colloquial style in the text of subtitles to the Ukrainian feature film “The Stronghold” and the ways of its translation into the English language. The compliance with the colloquial style in subtitles by the translator-subtitler adds some particular touch to the audiovisual product. Having analysed the use of colloquial vocabulary in the film, we concluded that the colloquial style was less adhered to in the English version. As for the English subtitler, he tried to neutralize Ukrainian colloquial words that caused different perception of the audiovisual product by the English recipients. Therefore, 10 examples out of 16 were translated with the help of neutralization (62,5 %) and 6 examples were translated with the help of vocabulary equivalents (37,5 %). Text reduction is an essential method of the translator-subtitler. It involves omission and compression of abundant or partially abundant language elements. Due to the fact that subtitles make the component of polysemiotic text that complete the content of audiovisual product and depend on its other components, the translator-subtitler can resort to situational reduction taking into account the strong connection between the dialog, the situational context and visual information. By means of the detailed analysis of the ways of language elements’ compression and omission in the subtitles’ text we found the strong connection between the verbal and sign components of the audiovisual product. In addition, the article highlights the phenomenon of subtitles’ text reduction on the lexical level. It provides analysis of the reduction and transformation of linguistic elements by means of: phrases simplification with the help of morphologic transformations (9,5 %), simplification of language units’ combinations with the help of words’ number reduction (33,5 %), generalizations (9,5 %), substitution of proper names and nouns with pronouns (14,2 %), and the use of shortened forms of auxiliary verbs (23,8 %). It is worth emphasizing that such language elements as: repetitions (of emotional interjections, phrases etc.) (25 %); proper names in addresses (16,6 %); linguistic means that render reprises, pauses (8,3 %); emotionally-colored interjections (41,6 %); linking words without semantic load (8,3 %) are most often omitted in the subtitles’ text. The directions for future research may involve the search for the ways of simultaneous usage of the subtitles’ text compression and the avoidance of possibility to lose original film’s expressiveness because of required omissions.

В статье исследуется разговорный стиль речи в тексте субтитров украинского художественного фильма «Сторожевая застава» и способы его перевода на английский язык. Кроме того, освещается явление редукции текста субтитров на лексическом и синтаксическом уровнях. Определено, что чаще всего в тексте субтитров опускаются такие языковые элементы: повторы, имена собственные, в обращениях, языковые средства, которые передают репризы, паузы, эмоционально-окрашенные возгласы, слова-связки, не несущие семантической нагрузки.
